Vectical Side Effects

Itching, skin discomfort, and increased blood calcium levels are the most commonly reported side effects with Vectical. In most cases, reactions such as these are mild and generally easy to treat. However, contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop potentially serious problems, such as vomiting, confusion, or problems breathing.

An Introduction to Vectical Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Vectical® (calcitriol ointment) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Vectical. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Vectical

Vectical has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Vectical, while another group was given a placebo (a similar product that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In these studies, the most common Vectical side effects included:

  • Mildly high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia) -- in up to 24 percent of people
  • Skin discomfort -- up to 3 percent
  • Itching -- up to 1 percent.
