Can I Buy Generic Topicort?
Topicort® (
desoximetasone) is a prescription skin medication used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as
psoriasis and eczema. It is a topical steroid (a steroid that is applied to the skin) that is used twice a day. It comes in the form of an ointment, a cream, and a gel.
Brand-name Topicort is made by Taro Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, the patents for Topicort have expired, and generic versions are also available.
Generic Topicort is available in the following strengths and forms:
- Desoximetasone 0.25% ointment
- Desoximetasone 0.25% cream
- Desoximetasone 0.05% cream
- Desoximetasone 0.05% gel.
It is made by various different manufacturers, such as Perrigo and Taro Pharmaceuticals. It should be noted that the cream, ointment, and gel are not interchangeable. For instance, if your healthcare provider writes you a prescription for the gel, then you can receive only the gel, not the cream or ointment.
Is Generic Desoximetasone as Good as Topicort?
All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.
All of the generic versions of desoximetasone currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Topicort.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with
allergies or sensitivities.
