Generic Taclonex

You can now buy the ointment form of Taclonex (calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate) as a generic. The FDA has determined that the generic version is equivalent to the brand-name drug. In fact, one company's product is actually brand-name Taclonex ointment that has been relabeled as a generic.

Can I Buy Generic Taclonex?

Taclonex® (calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate) is a prescription psoriasis medication. It contains calcipotriene (an artificial form of vitamin D) and betamethasone (a topical steroid). The medication comes in the form of an ointment and a suspension (liquid).

Brand-name Taclonex is made by LEO Pharma, Inc. The ointment form of this medication (but not the scalp suspension) is available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Taclonex

Generic Taclonex is available in one strength: Calcipotriene/betamethasone ointment, which contains 0.064% betamethasone and 0.005% calcipotriene.

It is sold by manufacturers such as:

  • Sandoz, Inc.
  • Perrigo New York, Inc.

The version sold by Perrigo is actually an "authorized generic," which means that it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Taclonex in every way (it is even made by LEO Pharma), except it comes in a tube with a generic name.

Are the Generics as Good as Brand-Name Taclonex?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.

An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic versions of Taclonex currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to the brand-name product.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
