Generic Sorilux

At this time, a generic version of Sorilux is not available. The exclusivity rights are not set to expire until 2013, which is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the drug can be produced. It is important to note that calcipotriene is the "generic name" for Sorilux, not a generic version of the drug.

Can I Buy Generic Sorilux?

Sorilux® (calcipotriene foam) is a prescription psoriasis medication. It is an artificial form of vitamin D and comes in the form of a foam.

Sorilux is made by DPT Laboratories, Ltd., for Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. It is not available in generic form, as it is protected by a patent that prevents any generic Sorilux from being sold in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Sorilux is protected from generic competition from exclusivity rights that expire in October 2013. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Sorilux uses.

Is Calcipotriene the Same as Generic Sorilux?

No -- calcipotriene is the active ingredient in Sorilux (as well as in a few other products), not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

A few calcipotriene products are available in generic form. Dovonex® liquid and ointment (but not cream) are available as generics. Although these products are not interchangeable with Sorilux, they might possibly be more affordable options for some individuals.
