Can I Buy Generic Soriatane?
Soriatane® (
acitretin) is a prescription
psoriasis medication. It is typically reserved for very severe cases that have not responded to other treatments, as Soriatane can cause serious side effects and birth defects.
Soriatane is made by Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. There are no generic versions of Soriatane available in the United States at this time.
However, if you search the Internet for "generic Soriatane," you may find a number of companies selling it. The fact is that these medicines may be fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. There may be generic Soriatane available from another country, but there is really no way of knowing if you are getting genuine Soriatane or not.
Perhaps more importantly, Soriatane should be purchased only from a licensed pharmacy with a valid prescription, as this ensures that all the rigorous requirements (in place to prevent pregnant women from taking Soriatane) are met.
When Will Generic Soriatane Be Available?
This is a difficult question to answer. There are no unexpired Soriatane patents listed with the FDA. Theoretically, any generic manufacturer could make a generic version of Soriatane as soon as they applied to the FDA and showed that their product was equivalent to Soriatane. It is unclear why no companies have chosen to do so.
Perhaps no generic companies want to take on the risk (given the serious side effects and birth defects that may occur), perhaps the market for this medication is too small, or perhaps there are other problems that make it logistically difficult to produce a generic Soriatane.
