Generic Soriatane

There are two different strengths available for generic Soriatane (acitretin) capsules: 10 mg and 25 mg. The FDA has given all of the generic versions an "AB" rating, meaning they are equivalent to the brand-name version of the drug. However, the generic versions are allowed to contain different inactive ingredients.

Can I Buy Generic Soriatane?

Soriatane® (acitretin) is a prescription psoriasis medication. It is typically reserved for very severe cases that have not responded to other treatments, as Soriatane can cause serious side effects and birth defects.

Brand-name Soriatane is made by Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. However, the drug is also available in generic form.

Generic Soriatane Availability

Generic Soriatane capsules are available in the following strengths:

  • Acitretin 10 mg
  • Acitretin 25 mg.

Generic Soriatane is made by various manufacturers, such as:

  • Prasco Laboratories
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals USA.

The version made by Prasco is actually an "authorized generic," meaning that it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Soriatane in every way (it is even made by Stiefel Laboratories), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.

Is Generic Acitretin as Good as Soriatane?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.

An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Soriatane versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Soriatane.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
