Methotrexate Dosage

Dose of Methotrexate for Cancer

The recommended dosage of methotrexate for treating cancer can vary significantly, based on the type of cancer, your weight, and how well you tolerate the drug. For some types of cancer, methotrexate is given once a week; for other types, it is given cyclically, such as a five-day course of treatment with a week-long (or longer) break between treatments.

General Methotrexate Dosing Information

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with methotrexate include the following:

  • The medication comes in the form of a tablet and an injection. The tablet form is taken by mouth, and the injectable form can be injected into a muscle, artery, vein, or the space around the spinal cord -- or injected just under the skin.

  • A dose of methotrexate can be taken with or without food.

  • It does not matter what time(s) of day you take this medication. However, it should be taken at the same time each day or each week.

  • For methotrexate to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or methotrexate dosing in general, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
