Common Methotrexate Side Effects

As with any medicine, it's possible to experience side effects with
methotrexate (Rheumatrex®, Trexall®). Methotrexate is a relatively old medication. As is common with older medications, the prescribing information for methotrexate lists only vague information about possible side effects.

According to this limited information, some of the most common side effects see with this drug include:

  • Low white blood cell counts (as measured by a blood test)
  • Mouth sores, such as canker sores
  • High liver enzymes (as measured by a blood test)
  • Nausea and vomiting.

Methotrexate is a powerful medication, which means it can cause significant and sometimes serious side effects. Because of this risk, it is usually reserved for treating severe diseases in cases where other treatments have failed or are not appropriate.
