Psoriasis Home > Fluocinonide Ointment Side Effects

Some of the possible side effects of fluocinonide ointment may include acne, stretch marks, or skin dryness. In most cases, reactions to this medicated skin ointment tend to be minor and easily treated. However, there are also some problems that are potentially serious and should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including hallucinations, difficulty breathing, and ruptured tendons.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Fluocinonide Ointment

Just like any medicine, fluocinonide ointment (Lidex®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with fluocinonide ointment. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Fluocinonide Ointment Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of fluocinonide ointment are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) or diabetes
  • Infections
  • Ruptured tendons
  • Psychotic reactions, such as hallucinations or extreme aggression
  • Glaucoma
  • Severe fluid retention
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
In general, these serious reactions are extremely unlikely to occur when fluocinonide ointment is used as directed for a short period of time. Applying too much over too large an area, for extended periods of time may increase the risk for serious steroid side effects.
