Available by prescription only, Derma-Smoothe/FS® (fluocinolone oil) comes as a scalp oil or body oil. The scalp oil is approved to treat scalp psoriasis in adults, while the body oil is prescribed to treat atopic dermatitis in adults and children as young as three months old.
When used in adults, the body oil is usually applied on the affected areas of the skin three times daily; for children, it is applied twice daily for up to four weeks. The scalp oil is applied to the scalp, covered with a shower cap, and left on overnight.
Although most people tolerate this medication well, some people may develop side effects. Common reactions to this product include skin irritation, burning, or itching.
