Psoriasis Home > Cyclocort Side Effects

As a topical medication that is applied on the skin, Cyclocort is commonly reported to cause skin reactions like dryness, burning, and itching. In most cases, these problems are minor and easily treated. However, there are some potentially serious Cyclocort side effects, such as hallucinations, severe fluid retention, or difficulty breathing, which require medical treatment.

An Introduction to Cyclocort Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Cyclocort® (amcinonide) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Cyclocort. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Reported Side Effects of Cyclocort

For many medications, particularly newly approved ones, the prescribing information carefully explains the exact percentage of side effects that were seen in clinical trials. However, the prescribing information for almost all older medications, including Cyclocort ointment and cream, includes relatively vague information on possible side effects. Therefore, it can be difficult to know exactly how frequently these reactions occur.
Common side effects of all topical steroids, including Cyclocort, include but are not limited to:
  • Dryness
  • Inflammation or infection of skin follicles (folliculitis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Allergic contact dermatitis (allergic skin reactions)
  • Soft, whitened skin, much like skin that is constantly wet
  • Weakening and thinning of the skin
  • Acne
  • Decreased skin pigmentation
  • Rash around the mouth
  • Stretch marks
  • Heat rash.
Side effects are more likely to occur if you cover Cyclocort with a bandage, as this increases the absorption of the medication. Do not cover the medication unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Cyclocort lotion is a newer form of the drug. As a result, the information on potential side effects is slightly more detailed. In one study, common side effects of the lotion included:
  • Itching
  • Stinging
  • Soreness
  • Burning.
However, these reactions were also commonly reported by people using a placebo medicine (a lotion that did not contain any active ingredient).
