Luxiq and Pregnancy

As a pregnancy Category C medication, Luxiq (betamethasone valerate foam) may be used during pregnancy. In fact, the active ingredient in this drug is often given during pregnancy to help develop the lungs of a baby who will likely be born prematurely. As a safety precaution, however, it should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary.

Can Pregnant Women Use Luxiq?

Luxiq® (betamethasone valerate foam) is a prescription topical steroid approved for treating various skin conditions. Based on the information currently available, it is unclear if the drug is safe for use during pregnancy. As with most medications, it should be used during pregnancy only if necessary, at the lowest effective dose, and for the shortest possible time.

What Is Pregnancy Category C?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

In addition, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Luxiq is a steroid. Animal studies have shown that steroids may increase the risk of birth defects. Similar problems might also occur in humans, although the risk is probably smaller with topical steroids like Luxiq that are applied to the skin.

While short-term use of Luxiq (a few days) applied to a small area like the scalp is not likely to cause problems (although this is not known for sure), extended use or use over a large area of the body should be avoided during pregnancy, if possible.

Interestingly, betamethasone, the active ingredient in Luxiq, is often used to help mature the fetal lungs in babies that are expected to be born prematurely. In this situation, usually a single dose is given by injection.
