Can I Buy Generic Locoid?
Locoid® (
hydrocortisone butyrate) is a prescription skin medication that is available in several forms, including a cream, ointment, solution (liquid), lotion, and Lipocream. It is a topical steroid that is applied on the affected areas of the skin two or three times a day.
Locoid Lipocream is different from most creams, including regular Locoid cream. It holds in moisture like an ointment, but feels like a cream because it does not leave a greasy, messy film.
Brand-name Locoid products are made by Ferndale Laboratories, Inc., for Triax Pharmaceuticals, LLC. Locoid Lipocream and Locoid lotion are not yet available in generic forms. However, the cream, ointment, and solution products are available in generic form, and are manufactured by Rouses Point and Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
Generic Locoid is available in the following strengths and forms:
- Hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1% cream
- Hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1% ointment
- Hydrocortisone butyrate 0.1% solution (liquid).
When Will Generic Locoid Lipocream and Lotion Be Available?
The patent for Locoid Lipocream is set to expire in June 2014. The patent for Locoid lotion is set to expire in January 2025. These are the earliest predictable dates that generic versions could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period for these products. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new
Locoid uses.
As stated previously, Locoid Lipocream is different from most creams, including regular Locoid cream. Locoid Lipocream is not interchangeable with any other hydrocortisone butyrate products. If you would like to try a different hydrocortisone butyrate product, you will need to have your healthcare provider write you a new prescription.
