People who have certain skin conditions may benefit from Kenalog cream. This medicated skin cream's uses include the treatment of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and poison ivy, just to name a few. What Is Kenalog Cream Used For?

Kenalog® cream (triamcinolone acetonide cream) is a prescription skin medication used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include but are not limited to:

Kenalog cream is approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids. This skin cream spreads and rubs into the skin easily, and does not leave a greasy film. However, in some situations, the ointment form of the medication (triamcinolone acetonide ointment) might be more appropriate.

How Does Kenalog Cream Work?

Kenalog cream belongs to a group of medications known as glucocorticoids, which are a type of corticosteroid (or "steroid" for short). Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Kenalog cream works for most conditions by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.

Can Children Use It?

Children can use Kenalog cream. However, children may be more likely to absorb more of the drug through the skin into the rest of the body, increasing the risk for side effects. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Kenalog cream.

In general, if this cream is to be applied to the diaper area, do not use tight-fitting diapers or "plastic pants," as they may increase the absorption of the drug. Breathable fabrics or diapers should be used.
