What Is Etanercept Used For? (Cont.)

Etanercept for Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is a form of joint inflammation in people with psoriasis (an autoimmune disease of the skin). Not all people with psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis. Some of the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include painfully inflamed joints and changes in the eyes and the fingernails.

Etanercept is approved to reduce the signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis. For psoriatic arthritis, etanercept does more than just improve the symptoms; etanercept actually helps prevent joint damage and worsening of the disease. Etanercept is also approved to be used with methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis.

Etanercept for Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is another autoimmune disease that causes painful arthritis of the spine. In people with ankylosing spondylitis, the immune system begins functioning abnormally and begins to attack the spine. This results in pain and stiffness, especially in the lower back. Other ankylosing spondylitis symptoms include changes in the eye and recurring canker sores.

Etanercept is approved to reduce the signs and symptoms of active ankylosing spondylitis.

Etanercept for Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a fairly common condition of the skin and joints. Psoriasis causes problems because the immune system attacks the skin and joints. Symptoms of psoriasis include scaly patches or plaques on the skin, especially near the elbows and knees.

Etanercept is approved for treating plaque psoriasis in adults (over age 18) with moderate or severe plaque psoriasis. Etanercept will improve the signs and symptoms of psoriasis, but it is not a cure for psoriasis.
