Dovonex and Pregnancy

In certain cases, a woman who is pregnant can take Dovonex, provided the benefits outweigh the risks. In animal studies, giving this medication to pregnant rabbits increased the risk of bone abnormalities. However, humans and animals do not always respond to drugs the same way, so it is unclear if the same thing would happen to a human.

I'm Pregnant -- Can I Use Dovonex?

Dovonex® (calcipotriene) is a prescription psoriasis medication that is applied to the skin. Based on the results of animal studies, it may present some risks to the fetus when used during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown.

What Is Pregnancy Category C?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

In addition, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Giving Dovonex to pregnant rabbits increased the risk of various bone abnormalities, which might be expected since Dovonex is a synthetic form of vitamin D that can affect how the body handles calcium. It is unclear whether such problems are possible or likely with human use.

It is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
