Derma-Smoothe Uses

Derma-Smoothe Use for Scalp Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes patches of thickened, swollen, and red skin, often covered with silver scales. It occurs when the immune system malfunctions, and sends out a faulty signal that triggers an immune response. This leads to inflammation and a rapid turnover of skin cells (see Psoriasis Causes).

Cell turnover is the process in which skin cells that grow deep in the skin slowly rise to the surface. This process usually takes about a month. However, with psoriasis, it can happen in just a few days because the cells rise too fast and pile up on the surface.

Psoriasis can occur on any part of the body, including the elbows, knees, other parts of the legs, hands, feet, and face. Many people will have psoriasis on their scalp. Scalp psoriasis can extend beyond the hairline, to the back of the neck, behind the ears, and the forehead. Derma-Smoothe is approved to treat scalp psoriasis in adults.

How Does It Work?

Derma-Smoothe is part of a group of medications known as corticosteroids, or steroids for short. It works by decreasing inflammation and suppressing an overactive immune system. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are thought to occur when the immune system has an overactive response to some kind of trigger, leading to symptoms such as redness, a rash, and itching. By suppressing the immune system and decreasing inflammation, Derma-Smoothe can reduce the symptoms of these conditions.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Derma-Smoothe?

Derma-Smoothe body oil is approved to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in children who are at least three months of age. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than three months old. The scalp oil is only approved for use in adults.

Children are more likely to absorb this medication into their body through the skin, which could cause potentially serious side effects. Therefore, it should only be used for up to four weeks at a time. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medicine in children.
