Derma-Smoothe and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done to determine if Derma-Smoothe (fluocinolone oil) passes through human breast milk. Therefore, it is not known whether the drug would cause problems in a nursing infant. Although this medicine is applied on the skin and very little of the drug is expected to reach the bloodstream, talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks of using Derma-Smoothe while breastfeeding.

More Information About Derma-Smoothe and Breastfeeding

Derma-Smoothe has not been studied in nursing women. Therefore, it is unknown if the medication passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing infant.

Corticosteroid medications generally pass through breast milk when taken by mouth, and could cause side effects in a nursing infant, such as slowed growth. However, Derma-Smoothe is a topical medicine. When used as directed, for a short period of time, very little of the drug is expected to be absorbed through the skin. Therefore, short-term use is not expected to cause any problems during breastfeeding.

It should be noted, however, that certain things may increase the amount of Derma-Smoothe absorbed through the skin, such as using the medicine more often than recommended, using it on large areas of skin, or covering the treated skin with a bandage or dressing. In addition, Derma-Smoothe is a potent corticosteroid. If a breastfeeding woman requires long-term treatment, a less potent corticosteroid may be more appropriate.

In addition, if you are breastfeeding, you should avoid applying Derma-Smoothe to the breast or nipple area, which would directly expose a nursing infant to the medicine. Also, try to limit direct skin-to-skin contact with areas of the skin where Derma-Smoothe has been applied.
