Precautions and Warnings With Cyclosporine

You may have an increased risk for developing infections, skin cancer, or certain other complications if you are taking cyclosporine. This medicine can also interfere with a wide variety of medications and may not be safe for people who have kidney disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Other safety precautions and warnings with cyclosporine apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Cyclosporine?

Talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking

cyclosporine (Gengraf^®, Neoral^®, Sandimmune^®) if you have:

Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
Liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Diabetes
Low cholesterol
Lymphoma, skin cancer, or any other type of cancer
An infection of any kind
Plans to receive a vaccine
Been told you have low levels of magnesium in your blood
Ever been treated with ultraviolet light therapy, coal tar, radiation therapy, or medications that suppress the immune system
Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:

Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant (see Cyclosporine and Pregnancy)
Breastfeeding (see Cyclosporine and Breastfeeding).

You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
