Can I Buy Generic Cyclocort?
Cyclocort® (
amcinonide) is a prescription skin medication used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as
psoriasis and eczema. It is a topical steroid that is applied to the skin two or three times a day. It comes in the form of an ointment, a cream, and a lotion.
Brand-name Cyclocort was made by Astellas Pharma, but is no longer available. However, it is still available in generic form.
Generic Cyclocort comes in the following strengths and forms:
- Amcinonide 0.1% lotion
- Amcinonide 0.1% cream
- Amcinonide 0.1% ointment.
At this time, E. Fougera & Co. and Taro Pharmaceuticals make these products.
Is Generic Amcinonide as Good as Cyclocort?
All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generic versions are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic versions of amcinonide currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Cyclocort.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. Occasionally, these inactive ingredients can cause problems for people with
allergies or sensitivities.
