About Psoriasis
Anyone can get psoriasis, a skin disease characterized by patches of thick, red skin on the knees, scalp, palms, lower back, soles of the feet, and other locations. Other symptoms of psoriasis vary depending on the specific type of psoriasis a person has. For example, people with pustular psoriasis develop blisters of noninfectious pus on the skin, while people with inverse psoriasis develop smooth, red patches in the folds of the skin near the genitals, under the breasts, or in the armpits. Treating psoriasis can often require a trial-and-error approach involving topical treatments, light therapy (which uses artificial ultraviolet light), or medicines taken internally by pill or injection. Psoriasis research scientists are currently studying new treatments for the disease. In addition to benefiting people with psoriasis, this research may also help people with multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, among other conditions.
